F. A. Q.
Q. When did you start learning how to draw?
A. My parents have always provided lots of art supplies and support while growing up, so between them and the Lord giving me a desire to just draw all the time, I’ve been immensely blessed. I’ve been drawing ever since I hold a Magna Doodle.
When I was little I wanted to be a cartoonist, until one day I started reading a book with characters and landscapes so enthralling, I determined I was going to illustrate that book! But to my horror, I could only draw these bumbling little cartoon people. That’s about when I started taking art more seriously. When I was about 12-14 I took a few drawing and watercolor lessons from two artists we knew. They were a huge blessing in helping me onto the right track, and at 17 I took a college art class on composition.
Q. What materials do you use?
A. I use a variety, depending on the medium and project, but here’s a general list of resources and materials I’m currently blessed to use:
– Sketch books
– Derwent and Prismacolor Drawing pencils
– kneadable erasers, sharpeners
– Arches watercolor paper, 140lb cold press
– Winsor & Newton watercolors
– Nikon D60 for reference photos
– 15″ MacBook Pro, Photoshop (CS5)
– Wacom Bamboo tablet for drawing
Q. What books or resources do you recommend to people or young students who want to explore art more?
I’m going to be compiling a “Resources” page; it’s coming soon! (3/26/15)
Q. How are your prints produced?
A. We have a regular scanner and printer that we use for scanning and ‘ordinary’ printing, as well as a professional grade Epson printer for the art prints. Once I’ve finished a painting, my sister Emily Rose takes it into Photoshop, cleans up the little mistakes and slightly adjusts it to get the best coloring. When it’s just the way we like it, we print it onto Epson’s professional luster paper.
Q. Who publishes your books? Can you publish my book?
A. Our small publishing company, Noble Rose Press, is owned by us, but our books are produced by Jostens printing company. They always do such an excellent job! We currently publish our own books.
Q. Do you do custom artwork?
A. As much as I’d love to, I’m currently unable to take on any custom work. But if you have any ideas or suggestions as to what you’d like to see in my Etsy shop, I’d still love to hear from you!
Q. Would you be interested in illustrating my story?
A. I’m currently working on a children’s book, and I’m booked up for the next year or more.
Q. How can I contact you through email?
A. You can drop me a line via my contact page or leaving a comment. I’m not always able to answer, but I guarantee you I’ll read it!
